Overview

This 1972 Maserati Ghibli is one of 1,170 coupes manufactured during six years of production, approximately 425 of which left the factory with power from a 4.9-liter quad-cam V8. Chassis # 2374 resided in the San Diego area before spending 22 years with an owner in the New York region. It then spent seven years in a private collection, from which it was acquired by the WCDM in 2022. A cosmetic refurbishment performed while in its previous owner’s collection included a repaint in Bleu Sera Metallizzato and reupholstery of the interior in tan leather with blue carpeting. The car is equipped with a ZF five-speed manual transmission, servo-assisted disc brakes, 15” Campagnolo alloy wheels, power steering, air conditioning, and a Becker Europa stereo. This Tipo AM115/49 is now offered with invoices dating back to 1988, an owner’s manual. The Ghibli debuted at the 1966 Turin Motor Show featuring steel bodywork styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro during his time with Carrozzeria Ghia. This late example left the factory finished in Celeste Chiaro and was refinished in its current shade of blue after being disassembled and stripped to bare metal during a 2018 repaint.

Exterior design details include dual hood vents, a low-profile trunk lip, round-edge headlight covers, chrome rear bumper overriders, front bumperettes with rubber inserts, amber front turn signals, and round side signal repeaters. Campagnolo cast alloy wheels are outfitted with simulated knock-off hubcaps and wear 215/70VR15 Michelin XWX tires, as does a matching spare housed in the rear cargo compartment. Power assistance is integrated into the steering and braking systems, the latter of which utilizes ventilated discs at each corner.

The cabin was reupholstered in 2017 with tan leather over the seats, console, door panels, and lower dash. Blue carpeting lines the floors and rear cargo area, and additional features include mousehair upper dash upholstery, headrests, black lap belts, air conditioning, power windows, and a Becker Europa stereo. The air conditioning compressor and hoses were replaced in 2019, at which time the system was recharged with R134. The wood-rimmed steering wheel sits on a four-way adjustable column and features a padded horn button. Veglia Borletti instrumentation includes a 200-mph speedometer, a tachometer with a 5,500-rpm redline, and an oil pressure gauge. Instruments to the driver’s right include a clock, an ammeter, and gauges monitoring coolant temperature, oil temperature, and fuel level. The five-digit odometer shows 31k miles.

The SS variant’s 4.9-liter V8 is a higher-displacement evolution of the standard Ghibli’s powerplant and was factory rated at 335 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 355 lb-ft of torque at 4k rpm. Features include an aluminum block and cylinder heads, dual overhead camshafts on each cylinder bank, dry-sump lubrication, and quadruple Weber 42 DCNF carburetor. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a ZF five-speed manual transmission. Suspension incorporates a coil-sprung double-wishbone front setup and a leaf-sprung solid rear axle, with telescopic shock absorbers and anti-roll bars at each end. Images of the car during the 2018 refit are available as are invoices from the paintwork, interior re-trim, and air conditioning refresh.
