Overview

This fully restored 1970 Maserati Ghibli is one of 1,170 coupes manufactured during six years of production and was completed in July 1970 before being delivered new to Foreign Cars City in West Nyack, New York. Chassis 1584 was purchased by its previous owner in 2007 from the former owner of MIE Corporation and subsequently underwent a nine-year restoration. Work included a repaint in its original shade of Marrone Colorado, re-upholstery of the interior in factory-specified Senape Connolly leather, and a rebuild of the numbers-matching 4.7L quad-cam V8. Additional features include quadruple Weber carburetors, a ZF five-speed manual transmission, servo-assisted disc brakes, 15” Borrani wheels, power steering, air conditioning, and a Becker Grand Prix radio. This Ghibli is offered for sale with a copy of its factory delivery notice, a Maserati Classiche Certificate of Origin, invoices and photos from the restoration, factory literature, a tool kit, and a clean BC Registration.

The Ghibli was introduced at the 1966 Turin Motor Show with steel bodywork styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro during his time with Carrozzeria Ghia. Design features evolved through the early stages of the model’s production, and this example includes dual air vents in its hood, a low-profile trunk lip, round-edge headlight covers, rear bumper overriders, and a single bullet-style side mirror. Also featured on this car are chrome fender vent spears and a recessed rear license plate mounting surface. The car was stripped of a previous repaint in red and returned to its original shade of Marrone Colorado (3221) by Mortenson’s Custom Touch in Couer d’Alene, Idaho, between 2012 and 2014. The window and fender vent trim pieces were re-chromed, and the window and body seals were replaced. The final two digits of the car’s chassis number can be seen stamped on the hood latch. Silver-painted Borrani aluminum wheels wear trident-logo octagonal center caps and are mounted with 225/70R15 Kuhmo Solus KR21 tires. A matching spare is housed under the rear compartment floor. The servo-assisted braking system was refreshed by Speedware Motorsports in Redmond, Washington, during the restoration and features ventilated discs all around.

The cabin was reupholstered during the restoration using Senape “printed and crushed” Connolly leather (PAC 1775) sourced from Connolly in the UK in 2018. Upholstery work was performed by Rudy’s Custom Upholstery in Murietta, California. Additional features include tan carpeting over the floors and rear cargo shelf, black mousehair dash trim, headrests, black lap belts, air conditioning, power windows, a Becker Grand Prix radio, and a four-way adjustable steering column. The wood-rimmed steering wheel features a padded horn button and frames Veglia Borletti instrumentation including a 200-mph speedometer, a tachometer with a 5,500-rpm redline, and an oil pressure gauge. Instruments to the driver’s right include a clock and gauges monitoring amperage, coolant temperature, oil temperature, and fuel level. The five-digit odometer shows 46k miles. Only 1500 miles have been added since full mechanical, interior, exterior rebuild and restoration.

The 4.7-liter Tipo AM115 features an aluminum block and cylinder heads, dual overhead camshafts on each cylinder bank, and dry-sump lubrication. An engine overhaul between 2010 and 2011 was performed by Bentley and Rolls-Royce of Bellevue, Washington, and included the replacement of the pistons, main and rod bearings, valves, and timing chains. The four Weber 42 DCNF carburetors were also rebuilt, and a set of European-specification stainless-steel exhaust headers was installed. Electronic ignition has been added. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a ZF five-speed manual transmission, and the clutch was replaced at the time of the engine rebuild. The suspension was overhauled by Speedware Motorsports in 2011, with work including refinishing of various components and replacement of the bushings, ball joints, and Koni shock absorbers.

Number AM115*1584* is shown stamped on the engine block above, matching the chassis number shown stamped on the frame, chassis tag, door jamb tag, and dashboard tag . The avviso di spedizione lists the original colors as well as delivery to Foreign Cars City in West Nyack, New York. The Maserati Certificate of Origin lists a build month of July 1970. Images from the restoration are included with the sale along with invoices from the work. Also included are owner’s and parts manuals, a tool kit, binders of invoices and other documentation, and copies of Maserati Club International publication Viale Ciro Menotti.
