Overview

This 1971 Lamborghini Espada was manufactured for the US market in October 1970 as one of 575 Series II examples produced between 1970 and 1972. The car was sold new in Northern California and was acquired by WCDM in 2022 from the estate of the second owner of 43 years. The car is finished in silver over black leather upholstery, and power comes from a 3.9-liter quad-cam V12 paired with a five-speed manual transmission. Features include six Weber 40 DCOE 20-21 carburetors, an MSD ignition system, a GM-sourced alternator, an ANSA exhaust with stainless steel pipes, Koni dampers, Girling ventilated disc brakes, 15″ Campagnolo center-lock magnesium alloy wheels, fog lights, air conditioning, and power windows. An April 2022 service included the installation of a new battery as well as the addition of fresh fluids. This Espada is now offered at WCDM with factory books, tools, a Lamborghini Polo Storico certificate, service records from 1973 to present, and a clean BC Registration.

The Espada featured a Marcello Gandini-designed body built by Bertone and debuted at the 1968 Geneva Motor Show. The Series II debuted at the 1970 Brussels Motor Show and was replaced by the Series III in 1972, which remained in production until 1978. The steel bodywork on this example is finished in Argento and features Lucas fog lights, chrome bumpers, a wire-mesh grille, an aluminum hood with two NACA ducts, a Talbot-style mirror, pop-out side windows, louvered roof vents, an electrically heated rear window, a fixed glass tail panel above the taillights, and an ANSA quad-outlet exhaust system. The 7×15″ Campagnolo magnesium alloy wheels feature center-lock hubs and are mounted with 215/70 Michelin Defender tires showing 2013 date codes. A matching spare wheel with a Pirelli tire is fitted beneath the rear cargo floor. The suspension features double wishbones with coil springs and Koni dampers at all four corners as well as anti-roll bars. The four-wheel vacuum-assisted Girling vented disc brakes were introduced on Series II Espadas. Rebuilds of the front brakes and brake boosters were performed under the previous ownership, and fresh brake fluid was added in April 2022. The 2+2 cockpit features front and rear seats that were reupholstered in black leather in 1998.

Color-matching door panels and carpets are fitted, and features include woodgrain trim on the dashboard and door panels, air conditioning, power windows, a Voxson eight-track player, a Bertone dash badge, a front passenger footrest, a rear armrest, and black floor mats. Front three-point seat belts were installed under previous ownership along with a new brake light switch and a turn signal flasher. A replacement air conditioning compressor was also installed, and the system was converted to R134a refrigerant. The clock and radio do not work. The wood-rimmed steering wheel frames Jaeger instrumentation including a 190-mph speedometer, a 10k-rpm tachometer, an ammeter, and gauges for water temperature, oil pressure, oil temperature, and fuel level. The five-digit odometer shows 52k miles.

The 3.9-liter V12 features two overhead camshafts per bank and was factory rated at 350 horsepower and 290 lb-ft of torque. Six Weber 40 DCOE 20-21 carburetors, an MSD ignition system, and a GM-sourced alternator are fitted. Replacement spark plugs, wires, a distributor cap and rotor, camshaft and valve cover gaskets, and belts were installed under previous ownership, and a rebuild of the oil pump was also performed. A replacement battery was installed in April 2022, at which time an oil change was performed. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a five-speed manual transmission. A rebuild of the clutch slave cylinder was performed under the previous ownership along with the installation of a replacement fuel pump and stainless steel center exhaust pipes. The Lamborghini Polo Storico certificate is dated July 25, 2018, and lists factory colors and the engine number. Accolades bestowed on the car include:

  • 1980 – Second Place at the Palo Alto Concours d’Elegance
  • 1981 – People’s Choice Award at the Hillsborough Concours d’Elegance
  • 1998 – First in Class at the Palo Alto Concours d’Elegance
  • 2000 – Second in Class at the Palo Alto Concours d’Elegance
  • 2002 – Second in Class at the Palo Alto Concours d’Elegance
  • 2005 – First Place, Lamborghini Club America at Concorso Italiano
  • 2017 – Third Place, Lamborghini Club America at Concorso Italiano

This is an amazing example.
